PowerPoint: le lit de Procuste revisité

The way of making oral presentations has changed fast over the last two decades. Based originally on interior memory, oral discourse has been augmented by exterior support, first dedicated to the presenter and then shared with the audience. Nowadays, almost every oral presentation — especially in the corporate world — comes with a slide-show. These slide-decks and their usage raise a paradox: why do they continue their irresistible growth when they are routinely criticized by so many, and indeed have substantial drawbacks? We explain why PowerPoint documents are an adaptation to the context of attention economy, for the writer, the presenter and the audience. This point can be taken into account to improve the use of PowerPoint; and we show how.
